RELIEF WORKS

SYDNEY STREET DELAY

MORE WORK IN SIGHT

.Replying to Councillor Chapman at last evening's meeting of the City Council, the Mayor, Mr. G. A. Troup, said that the money available for the relief of unemployment was being eaten into at a. considerable rate, for the council had in its employ between 400 and 500 men, and it would not be possible to carry them right through the summer. However, there were some more works coining along, for instance, Sydney street, to which, for some reason, Councillor Chapman had taken objection—possibly to some extent adding to the delay—and the Earoa road job, upon which.the council had decided to spend £9000. He also proposed to make an appeal early in December for the public to subscribe with a view to establishing a small fund so that the men would be tided over Christmas, not in absolute want. Also he hoped that the demolition oi the old Mount Cook barracks would be started very shortly, as would also the erection of the campanile. The Board of Trustees of the Art Gallery and Museum JTuud was to meet the Act-ing-Prime Minister on Tuesday, and both these matters would be discussed. Replying to Councillor Semple, Mr. Troup said that the engineers were all ready to make a start in Sydney street, but he had been advised yesterday that the Government had received a petition from the residents objecting to the work: just what that might mean in delay he could not say.
