PETONE CLUB

The Fetone Rifle Club commenced the more serious.portion of its programme) at Trentham on Saturday, when the first two rarnjes i'or the. championship series were fired, ranges ;iOO and 500 yards. The clay's shootinj.' also counted for the Flaws Cup (B and C'grade handicap), aggregate, and was the first match in the second short range handicap scries. The weather conditions looked very unpromising at mid-day; but this did not affect the attendance, and if the close shooting,ou Satlivdny can be taken as an indication, the rivalry in the A, B, and C grade championships promises to be very keeu as the.| competition proceeds. The weather conditions could hardly have been more changeable at the 300 yards shooting, as some members had to contend with light rain and dull light, as well as the wind changes. The. best score here was registered by A. O'Donnell with a good 48, followed by W. Scambary. 40. F. Kcrshaw, E. Balliuger, H. Dickson, W. Johnston, and J. Hunter, with 45 each. At 500 yards the rain ceased, but the wind at times was very difficult to keep ''in step with," and. "inriers" at 3 o'clock'and 0 o'clock were most promiuent. The top scorer here was L. Wales with 47, followed by A.. Bullinger, F. Kershaw, E. Veitch', and H. Dickson with 46 each, and 7 members with 45. The shooting here certainly showed- definite; improvement, and out of the 36 scores as below, all but three averaged "inners" and over. The best aggregates off the gun for the day were short of the club standard of 93, but were quite satisfactory under the conditions. F. Kershaw, H. "Dickaon, and A. O'Donnell each totalled 91, E. Ballinger and W. Johnston 00, R. H. Nicholl and E.-. Veitch 89. The spoon winners for the day were F. Kershaw and H. Dickson in A grade, J. Hunter and P. J- Teal in B grade, G. R. Bull in C grade. Next Saturday the competitions will be 500 and 600 yards, and counting for the samo competitions. The following are''the scores:—
