COAL QUALITY

(To the Editor.)

Sir,—l gee that a deputation representing the West Coast mining industry is trying to induce the Government to use West Coast coal exclusively for tHe railways. Let us hope it is better coal than the long-suffering housewife gets. For some considerable period I have been getting West Coast coal that is mostly powder and small bits, although I pay for real coal. Latterly, however, in disgust I asked for Newcastle, and received a beautiful burning coal and fine large pieces that it was a pleasure to burn. Now, Sir, as a New Zealander why should I have to get Australian coal, and pay more for it, when decent samples of New Zealaud ought to be gold to anyone seeking it.—l &m'---* '. "-' MKS. SLACK. ,
