SCOUT HALL OPENED
The new Scout hall at Lyall Bay'erected by the City Council for the use of. the Lyall Bay troop was opened on Saturday afternoon, when a good number of. Scouts and friends were present. Mr. H. H. Miller, district commissioner, attended th» function.
Mr. W. F. Sherwood, chairman of the Troop Committee, said that the movement to obtain a new hall started a few years ago, when the scouting activities of the Lyall Bay troop began to fall away. The troop secretary, Mrs. K. Rudkin, thought that they needed a new hall, and had worked very hard for it. (Applause.) The City Council had met them very sympathetically when negotiating for the building, arid he thanked the council and the Director of Parks and Reserves. The hall was free of debt.
The Mayor, Mr. G. A. Troup, spoke of the enthusiasm of those who had worked for the hall. The troop had found £150, to which the council added £350, and the hall had cost about £480. It should bo sufficient for their present requirements, and if the troop increased in numbers extensions could easily be made. Surrounding the hall, said Mr. Troup, waa one of the finest playing fields in the Dominion. Mr. Troup spoke of the value of scouting for boys, and wished the troop every success in its occupancy of the hall.
Mr. R. Seraple, M.P., also congratulated the troop, and eulogised Mrs. Rudkiu's efforts. Mr. Semple said that scouts would in time have to bear the problems of the future, and scouting prepared them for that end. Mr. Troup then declared the hall open. Sir Alfred Robin presented Assist-ant-Scoutmaster J. Kelly with his warrant under the ceremony of Ipise. Scout* Brice and M'Kinley were presented with their 10 years' service stars. Sir Alfred spoke on the meaning of "Ipise," and on scouting generally- Mrs. Rudkin also spoke. Afternoon tea was served.
