COAL BY-PRODUCTS.

The possibility of lessening the Dominion's dependence on America by the development of coal by-products was raised in the House of Representatives last night by Mr. E. Semple (Labour, Wellington East).

Ho said that at present New Zealand was spending almost £2,000,000 in buying petrol from America. In the Dominion there were 1,631,000,000 proved tons of coal, and 100,000 tons of coal would produce 200,000 gallons of motor spirits, 150,000 gallons of kerosene, 500,000 gallons of fuel oil, and 500,000 gallons of road-sealing tar. This made a total of 1,300,000 gallons of liquid products, which was equal to 5000 tons. If six plants were' set up in New Zealand they would use 60,000 tons of coal per annum, and would provide work for 1000 men. Additional j men would also be required in the mines. The products from the six plants would include 180,000 gallons of liquid products and' 36,000 tons of smokeless fuel, as well as a number of cheap gases.
