THE DAY IN PARLIAMENT

The intentions of the Government in regard to the unemployment problem were considered at some length by the House of Representatives yesterday. The Unemployment Bill, as it was returned from the special Committee set up to consider it, Was taken in Committee, but little progress waß made. The discussion on the short title occupied the House for nearly five hours, and after that was disposed of, the Committee agreed to the clauses providing for the establishment ■of the unemployment fund. When the clause dealing with the levy was reached, progross was reported in order to enable the Government to consider the possibility of adopting the principle of a graduated scale of contributions. The Law Practitioners Amendment Bill and tho New Zealand University Amendment Bill were read a second time pro forma and referred to the Statutes Revision Committee. Some objection was raised to the Judicature Amendment Bill, which provides for an alteration in the constitution of the Bules Committee of the Supreme Court, a"nd eventually the Minister of Justice agreed that this also should go before the Statutes Eevision Committee. The House adjourned at 10.25 p.m. until 2.30 p.m. to-day.
