SEVERE PENALTY WHEN ENGAGEMENT BROKEN
At odd times horse trainers in New Jfealand have been put to much trouble »ad annoyance through the action of a rider engaged for a certain race agreeing at « later date to ride another horse in ■gie game event. Several such cases have «>ccnrred in this Dominion, but when ttronght before the Judicial Committee th« offender usually claims that there has been a misunderstanding. Unless documentary confirmation of the engagement fa produced, the charge is dismissed, but fn eases where the charge is substantiated, ilia jockey has got off with a light fine, and <w*k*wl to sfemd down for the race
in dispute. Evidently the Australian racing authorities take-a more serious view of such offences, as shown by the following:—; "A. Goddard, :a Qiieonshind lightweight jockey, who has lately been resident of Sydney., incurred the displeasure of the stipendiary stewards at Warwick Farm recently. It appears that H. England, trainer of -Clover Club, engaged Goddard to ride Clover Club in ;i race at the Farm. Overlooking this engagement, Goddard also engaged for Patois in the same race. It was Patois . that Goddard eventually rode. Mr. V. M. AVhite, owner of Clover Club, brought the. matter, under the notice of the stewards. After hearing what Goddard had to say, the stewards suspended him from riding iv races for one month: Tlio suspension will prove costly;,to 'Gpddard, as he had some promising engagements at the Queensland Turf, Club's. Exhibition Meeting this month.; He had intended to leave for Brisbane after the Bank Holiday Meeting at Moorefield." ....
