"UNJUST AND UNFAIR"
PROTEST OF LABOURERS' UNION
The-follpwing -resolution/was carried unanimously- by. the General; Labourers' Union last"night: "That this meeting of general labourers ;, protests I' against the decision in the .Unemployment Bill to levy a flat tax of 30s annually on the male section of the population to relieve unemployment. We consider that this proposal is unjust and I unfair to the minimum'wage worker, whose annual earnings are SJI3O, and j that it is obviously- unjust to ask- :him to pay 3Qs per year, -the same-as persons with incomes ranging up -to £20,000 a year. We'consider that as workers, ai;e not responsible for the unemployment problem, they should not be unjustly taxed to provide against its effects on the community. We appeal to the Labour organisations, both industrial and political, to bppose this vicious principle and to the Labour members in Parliament to fight the proposal tooth and nail. We consider that to ask wage-workers who are in no wise responsible for unemployment to contribute to its relief is absurd, and we protest against any scheme which makes this provision.'.'
