SECONDARY SCHOOLS
SOUTH-ISLAND TOURNEY
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)
INVERCARGILL, 25th August.
The -annual- South Island secondary schools- ■•Rugby' tournament commenced here to-day in brilliant sunshine, and before a large attendance.
In the . first match Otago defeated Christchurch by 14 points to 3 after a rather disappointing display by both teams. . .
The second match was highly exciting and spectacular. Southland gained A meritorious victory over Timaru almost on the call of time, the final score being 7 points to 5 in the home team's favour, -in-a-..match -invwhich the best traditions of-Becondary,..school- Rugby were fullyupheld. Southland, after trailing 5-nil until well on in the second spell, managed to snatch the game; from the fire by scoring an unconverted try and a potted goal. The pace throughout the match was amazingly-fast, but the teams were fit enough to stay the full distance. The match between Otago and Christchurch was disappointing. Christchurch started off with a great burst, and looked like easily holding; Otago, but after dominating the play for the first ten minutes, and at the same time losing one or two good chances of scoring, last year's winners of the tournament fell away, and Otago took a first spell lead of 7 points.! Christchurch went better in the second spell, and had many chances, but once again they failed, and scored only one try i to Otago's try and potted goal. The play of both teams was extremely patchy, tho backs fumbling throughout. Tho tournament will be concluded on Thursday. \ I
