NELSON WINS THE FINAL

OHRISTCHUKCH, 25th August.

■ Rugby football of a. very high standwas witnessed in the final game of the annual inter-Colldgiate tourney this afternoon, when Nelson College defeated Wellington College by 11 points to 5, and won the tournament for the first time.

The Nelson .forwards played magnificently, although giving away weight to the Wellington pack, and towards the end of thp hard-fought game they were still doing their work splendidly. Effective hooking gavp Nelson the ball time and again from the serums. The full-back, Newman, played a cool game, and his kicking was cleau and sure. ' Wellington College played right up to their opponents' form, and even in the last few- minutes they could have won tho; giu^ie, but the doggedness of the Nelson I'oijkvards held them in check. Particularly in the lirie-outs were the Wellington;, forwards at home, and tho backs were kept well supplied with the ball. The tackling also was deadly. The backs were not exceptionally fast as a whole, but their versatility in attack stood them in good stead. Sadler, at half, and Carlson, one of the'tiivp-eighths, - were both brilliant. ■ For sonic time after the start Nelson did tho attacking, but the Wellington forwards gradually forced them back to midfield. Then- the Nelson backs got under way, Richards doing good work behind the scrum, .but' Sloane relieved with a long kick, and the Wellington rearguard pressed, the defenders having to force down. The Nelson forwards returned to the attack, but Poulton got the ball aud relieved, with a long kick. WELLINGTON SCORE FIRST. . A ..strong- attack .by Wellington resulted in a scrum near the Nelson line. The ball went-over,-but Nelson forced. After a spell of ragged' play, Wellington gained ground with a free lack. Carlson sprinted down the line, but Nelson forced, and from the 'drop-out the: ball went to the Wellington twenty-five. A five-yards scrum was followed by an infringement by Wellington just in front of their posts, and Newman had little difficulty in sending the ball over. Nelson, 6; Wellington, 5. At this stage the excitement was at a high pitch,""and both packs were playing at the top of their form. After a spirited struggle ia the Wellington twenty-five, M'Ciure made an unsuccessful attempt to pot a gbaL- Sloane took the ball, kicked,/and followed up, but Newman cleared just in time. EXHILARATING PLAY. Both teams were clapping on the pace, arid play was most exhilarating to watch. Stewart relieved when Wellington looked dangerous. Off-side play by Nelson gave Carlson a difficult chance, but the kick, although a splendid effort, fell short. j --..Wellington-, pressed strongly, and Carlson was forced out when almost over.
