LOWER HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL
The fortnightly meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council was held last evening. Present: Sir A. P. Roberts (Mayor), and' Councillors W. G. Meldrum, D. S. Patrick, F. Campbell, J. Mitchell, A. J, Hobbs, J. E. Boyd, and A. Grierson. '.■ The Municipal Association suggested that the member for the district should be asked to press for 8 per cent, of the. whole petrol tax of 6d to go to the local bodies. '
Mr. W. Nash, M.P., advised that he had made representations to the Prime Minister on the lines suggested, and had re-, ceived a reply that the Government was in such urgent need of funds that the suggestion ' could not be complied".'with. The Prime Minister, however, promised that the present arrangement would be till 31st March, 1931, only, and that from Ist April, 1931, the full 8 per cent, would be paid. Mr. Nash was thanked for the interest he had taken.
Tho Mayor reported that the Loans Board had approved its unemployment loan of £5200, which would be raised at 5% per cent, for a term 0f.20 years. Councillor Patrick .pointed out the dangeirous condition of the corner of-White's Line and Wninui road. The engineer stated that as soon as spoil was available the matter would receive attention. On the recommendation of the Finance Committee, action is to be taken in regard to outstanding rates and accounts. Permission is to be granted for the erection of a hoarding at Donnelly's corner at a fee of £45 per. annum.
Tho engineer was asked to negotiate with tho Hutt County Council in regard to the. request of the: Education Board for an extension'bf"the council's sewer through county land to the Epuni school.
