ALPHA HUT
UNUSUAL, SXOYf CONDITIONS
A party of seven trampers left Kaitoke at 2.30 p.m. last Saturday, en route to Alpha hut, via Marchant, and reached the hut at 3.15 a.m. Sunday. As the photograph published elsewhere shows, unusual snow conditions prevailed on the Tararuas, and the party was content to enjoy the scene of raro beauty at Alpha without pushing on to the Kime hut, its original objective. In view of the conditions, it was decided to return to Kaitoke, and Alpha hut was left about 10 a.m. on Sunday, and the party arrived at Kaitoke via Tauherenikau about 8 p.m. One of the trampers, who has mado winter trips on tho Tararuas before, comments on the unusual prevalence of ice, which adhered to the trees in such a manner as to give the appearance of a petrified forest. Tho going was difficult because on the track the feet frequently broke through the ice-crust into the snow below.
