(Received Ist August, 10 a.m.) LONDON, 31st July. Australia defeated Somerset at Taunton by an innings and 158 runs. The weather was overcast and the wicket easy for the resumption of play o» the second day of the match. The overnight unbeaten batsmen, Bradman and Jackson, with their scores at 71 and 57 respectively, continued Australia's innings, which at the.close of the first day's play was 136 for one wicket. • The pair batted beautifully until nearing their centuries, when caution was shown. Bradman got his first in 185 minutes. -The side's two hundred had taken 205 minutes. Jackson's belated first century of the tour occupied 220 minutes. The pair had put ,on 231, when Bradman was brilliantly caught. He had hit thirteen 4's. Five runs later Jackson was out. He had hit fifteen boundaries and gave one chance. He scored freely to-day all round the wicket. M' Cabc failed. Richardson hit a sixer, and, attempting a second, was caught at the fence. Woodfull hit vigorously, and a'Beckett was also severe, hitting White for a four and a six in one over. The Australian innings lasted 365 minutes. Somerset opened at 4.20 p.m. The first wicket fell at 17. Pour were down for 26 and six for 43. Grimmett first appeared at 22, and soon had the batsmen struggling hopelessly. Wellard, however, hit him a tremendous sixer over the pavilion, and there was several minutes' delay in recovering the ball. The same batsman, emulating Biebardson, lifted one into the cemetery nearby. M'Cabe broke Grimmett's long run of triumph by skittling Hunt, but the googly bowler ended the match at 6.10 p.m., when Marshall skied one to Bradman. Following are the scores:— AUSTRALIA.
