Mi. 1-). Windley presided over yesterday's meeting of the Makara County Council. There were also present: Councillors W. S. Wheeler, A. J. Giddings, J. Purchase, K. W. Bothamley, L. C. Bryant, and K. G. Mexted.
The clerk of the Hutt County Council wrote regarding the appointment of a joint traffic .inspector, that definite information was now being obtained from the Main Highways Board so that each local body would know its liability under the proposed scheme,. A conference for prevention of traffic 'accidents had been held in Wellington some three weeks ago, when it was recommended to the Government
that a national and uniform system of traffic law, enforcement, and control be instituted. In reply to the conference, the Government had said that:this was the most important remit recommended, and promised to give the matter consideration. It was the opinion of the officer of the Transport Department that in view of these facts it might be advisable _to hold over consideration of the appointment of a joint traffic inspector for a short period until the' Government made a decision. The letter: was-, received. At the suggestion, of Councillor Bothamley a motion was passed that no more plans should be passed until such time as the council's road: specifications had been revised. The chairman agreed that the specifications should be brought down !at the next meeting. 1 The estimates for the year 1930-31 were considered at length> and the following tentative general rates were agreed upon for the various ridings. Last year's rates are given in parentheses: Belmont, 134-04 din the £ (60-64 d), increase 38r64d; Makara, Id in the £ (39-64 d), increase, 25-64 d; Ngahauranga, 1 49-64 din the £ (39-G4d), increase 1 10-64d;Ohariu, 2d in the £ (I 3-04 d), increase 61-64 d; Porirua, 2d in the £ (1 3-64 d), increase 61-64 d; Tawa, 1 42-64 d in the £ (13-64 d), increase 39-G4d; Titahi, 2d in the £ (60-64 d), increase 1 4-G4d. Of the special rates the hospital rate remains the same as last year, 25-64d.mthe £, nor does any increase appear m tae other special rates. ; ■ ' . The Public Works Department advised the council that neither; the. Mam Highways Board nor the Hallway Department was in a position at present to make funds available for the total elimination ot the' Porirua level crossing. In the' circumstances the Railway Department had agreed to install automatic flashing signals provided tho Main Highways Board and Makara County Council would contribute SO per cent, of the cost, which was estimated at £320. On the reeommemlatioii of the Works and Policy -Committee, at was decided to accept this offer.
