TEAM MISSING

EVENING GOES WEST

S OMB MISUNDERSTANDING

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)'

NAPIEB, 11th July

The expected visit of. the British Kugby footballers to a special korero, •arranged for them by tho Hastings Orphans Club last evening, did not eventuate. The reason was that owing to somo confusion the team did not know, according to their manager, Mr. J. Baxter, that they were expected. They had been 'entertained till a very late hour after the Maori match on Wednesday, and the necessity of keeping lit precluded their acceptance of last; evening's invitation.

Over three huudred orphans anil their friends were present, and all were keenly disappointed..

The original programme of entertainment for the visitors during their stay at Napier was submitted by the Hawkc's Bay Kugby Union to the New Zealand Rugby Union, who returned the draft with certain amendments, but the Hastings Orphans' fixture had been allowed to stand.

From the fact that changes had bepn made, it was assumed here that the New Zealand Union had submitted the programme to -the visitors and that the alterations were effected in accordance with their wishes and that tho remaining engagements were approved by them. However, Mr. Baxter stated last evening that he had no knowledge of the Hastings appointment. To-night the Hawkes". Bay Union decided to ask . the New Zealand Union for an explanation, of the misunderstanding. . ■ ' , Mr. A. Kirkpatrick (Hastings) stated that tho orphans had. gone to considerable expense and trouble to prepare an entertainment. Mr. J. \V. Norrie (chairman) said the union had sent the' programme to the New Zealand Union for submission to Mr. Baxter. On lClh June the New Zealrtnd Union replied confirming tho arrangements." That reply stated: "July 10 whole team' will attend Hastings Orphans* entertainment, but will leave i*arly in. lime to be in bed by 10 p.m." "When the matter. was referred to Mr. Baxter on the team's arrival heiv !k> paid the matter was submitted to him but it had been tuniod down. Mr. Norrio said his union would take no responsibility for the arrange■iient not being carried out.
