CUPS FOB ROWERS
j HANDSOME TROPHIES ! j (By Tclcoraph.) j j (Special to "The Evening Post.") j | -AUCKLAND, This Day. j | ' The two magnificent solid silver cups, I one an exact replica of the other, which are being presented by Mr. Hallyburtou Johnsrtone, of Point Chevalier, for competition among the rowers of the Dominion, stand about three feet high and arc beautifully wrought. A model of Diana, the goddess of hunting, surmounts each, and branching from her feet are two large I seashells in which the head of Nentune is | cunningly worked. Prominent among fine | workings at the base are heads of huntI ing hounds. , The two cups originally belonged to the , Duke of Buccleuch.; One is much older ! than the other, and it is thought that the 1 original vessel was copied in order to ' make a magnificent pair. The Duke presented them for patriotic purposes in KiifrJand, but they somehow found their way to New Zealand. When -Mi. Johnstone first saw them they were in a collection in an Auckland jeweller's shop. He was so taken by their beauty that he bought the whole collection in order to gain pos--1 session of them. Mr. Johnstone lias presented the cups 1 for four:dar • contests. One is for the championship of New Zealand, and can be rowed for anywhere in the Dominion; the 1 other has always to be rowed for in I Auckland, but can be won by crews from I anywhere. Mr. Johnstone's interest in the sport !is so deep that he has been appointed an ■ official of the eight-oar crew which will take part in tho Empire Games in Canada.
