This season's 20-a-side telegraphic fix» tures for the club championship of Ne^Zealand were commenced on Saturday even* ing "with the above match, and also th» Otago and Canterbury encounter. The preliminaries at this end were attended to> during the afternoon by Messrs. W. Toomath and 3T. K. Kelling, who had every^ thing in readiness at 6.15 p.m. The tw« teams rolled up punctually, and very fair progress was made, there being no mishaps with the wire.'. The .local officials were as follow:—Operator, W. Kennedy; umpire, H. M. Rosenberg; captain, W« Mackay; and scrutineers, Messrs. W. Toomath, H. M. Rosenberg, JR. 6. Didsbury, A. M'Kay, M. Ai Craven, J. B. Craven, and C. Dallas. The Wellington Club, which is 54 years old to-day,-having been founded, on 16th Juneilß76, won the toss, and thus had first move at the 'odd-nunj-bered boards. ■ . . - • . Kirkwod'd, J. C. P. Roskilly, H.—Ginoe* 20. Gongli, B. Sime, —.—Ginoco Three games were finished during tlis evening, as follows:—(a) Board 11, Wigham, with the rapid advance of a centre pawn, established the superior position, and locked up his opponent's queen-side pieces. He could have won a knight, but preferred to make a more "chessy" move that forced a, much admired "mate in. three" at move 19. (b) Fairburn, who i« seen at his best in telegraphic play, gained two pieces in quick succession, his opponent resigning a hopeless struggle at move 19; and (c) Mr. Hardy and his opponent, agreed to a draw at move. 18, after several exchanges had left a very even game. The local club thus has a lead of two games (2%-%), but on the other hand the Auckland Chess Club, wheh was minus the services of its champion, Mr. J. C. Grierson, is a pawn to the good at boards V) and 20. The remaining 15 games are in a very even state. The play concludes on. Saturday next, -when spectators should witness some very instructive finishes.
