STOLE EMPLOYERS' MONEY

A plea of guilty was entered in the Magistrate's Court to-day by James Andrew MAdam, aged 19, to a, charge of stealing money totalling £5 7s lid from John Myers and Co., Ltd. Detective-Sergeant Tricklebank * said that for the past two years the defendant had been working for the complainants at a wage of £1 10s a week. He had been given some money with which to pay various accounts around the city, but ho pocketed the money. He had not been in trouble before, and his father had made restitution. Stating that he had been asked by the accused's employers to interest himself m the ease, Mr. H. F. O'Leary said that like most of these oii'ences it did not start with any intention to steal; the accused had taken the money, regarding it as a temporary loan. As usual, however, the expected money with which the loan was to be repaid did not eventuate. When interviewed by detectives the accused was £5 7s lid short. Mr. E. Page, S.M., agreed with counsel's suggestion that it was a case for probation, and admitted MAdam to probation for twelve months. An application for the suppression of the accused's name was refused.
