PUBLIC SERVICE
A LIFE'S WORK
Appreciative reference was made by; Mr. M.Luckie, Deputy-Mayor, at the National HospitaT.Day celebration yes> terday, to the long and valuable hospital and social service rendered by the. late Babbi Van Staveren, by the-pre-, 'sent chairman of the Board (Mr. C. M. Luke), and by Mr. G. Petherick, chairman of the Social Service Committee. For fifty years -Mr. Van Staveren'had devoted much time, care, and attentioa to hospital affairs and to assisting tho poor and needy. In that respect it would be,difficult to adequately fill Mr. Van Stav<-,ren 'a place in the community. Mr. Luckie said he also desired to pay a tribute to the great' work done by; Mr. 0. M. Luke. The citizens owed a great debt of gratitude to Mr. Luke for his long and faithful public service in the humanitarian iield, extending to nearly half a century; and it was a pleasure to see that he was still actively carrying on the good work. The; duties were of a most onerous nature, and he was afraid the public did not adequately appreciate their great value. The speaker also alluded: to the lino public work done for iriany1 years past by Mr. G. Petherick. The labours of the chairman of the Social Welfare Committee 'wero difficult and often .ofi a painful, nature, for ho had to deal with numerous: cases of distress. Thai valuable public services rendered byj those he had mentioned could hardly be over-estimated.- '.-.■■
If was amazing to think, said Dr. Tj P. Corldll, that the respected chairman; (Mr. C. M. Luke) had in his lifetima seen the hospital advance from^ tha days when it had no trained nurses up to the splendid position it occupied today. Dr. T. H. A. Valiritine, •DirectorGeneral of Health, said that he and Mr. CM. Luke had been associated in hospital work for many years, and he was ablo to say that there was no man in, the country who stood so high as Mr, Luke in hospital service, and in looking after the welfare of the sick. Mr. Luke had done valuable work for nearly half a pentury, and had given tho speaker much assistance in connection withl the passing of, the Hospital and Charitable Institutions Act. -
