REDWOOD MEMORIAL TO SMITHEREENS

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) NELSON, 10th May. The weather was perfect for the second and last day of the Nelson Jockey Club's Annual Meeting, and there was a large attendance. The track was in good order. The ■ totalisator handled £10,4i)5. for the day, against £11,231 on the corresponding day lust year. For the meeting the sum is £17,091, against £20,033 last year. TRIAL STAKES. Seven horses went to the barrier in the Trial Stakes, Seventh Heaven 'and Glenace being equally fancied. Taura Lad was scratched. Gay Shot started badly, taili ■ the field. . Glenace led Seventh Heaven and Lady Gen into the straight, but in the run to the post Glenace faded out, Seventh Heaven passing the judge a length ahead of Lady Gen, with Glenace two lengths away. MAITAI TROT. Alpine Melody, with a record of over thirty starts without a win, broko her duck in the Maitai Trot by beating a field of ten, ot, which the bracketed pair, Kodie and Belle o' Mine, were installed favourites. Nelson Gara was second fancy, and Ailsa Bingen and Alpine, equally backed, next. Drift Wave made the pace from Kentucky Direct and Belle o' Mine, and on turning for home J." V. Dyke s horse was on oven terms with Nelson Gara and Ailsa Bingen, who appeared to be going well. However, Alpine' Melody went past the field with a good turn ol spued,- winning l"roni Ailsa Bingen. by « length. Belle oJ Mine, who was locked in on •■the rails, came third two lengths away. REDWOOD MEMORIAL. Smithereens reproduced his good form of the first day in winning the Redwood Memorial Handicap from a field of seven. Make Up was scratched. Tourist, with the inside berth, was made a strong favourite, Smithereens and Imateagirl being a little better than half as well backed as the favourite. From a good start Smithereens, ridden by Young, went to the front and was never headed. Baby Bun and Imateagirl put in good runs, but neither could reach the horse from the West Coast, who warded off a challenge by Tourist in the straight and won running away' by a lei.gth from Tourist. Spearmiss started slowly and tailed the field for the greater part of the journey, but Burgess brought the Greyspear three-year-old along in a final effort which put her in third place, a head behind Tourist. PRESIDENT'S HACK CUP. Es Dono was the favourite in the President's Hack Cup, which drew a field of eight. Dainty Ways and Ravine were also fairly well backed. Fair Go, winner of the Novice Stakes on the first day, jumped out smartest and -led. to the straight, with Ravine in behind. .In,the run to the judge Ravine cleared away from the field and won going away ,by four lengths from Dainty Ways, who just beat the favourite for second place. , Fair Go was fourth. WAKATU TROT. The Wakatu Trot was easy for the locally-owned and trained Nelson's Chum. Starting off the limit, Nelson's Chum soon h".d a lead of five lengths and eld it for nearly a mile, when lie was cased up, and even then won easily from Belle o' Mine, which again ran solidly. Alpine Melody, put in a good run at one stage, but ChancellorsWilkcs .held his third position in the straight. It was Nelson Chum's first race. He is a three-year-old owned and trained by L. F. Berkett, of Hope. FLYING HANDICAP. x Deluge went out a good favourite in the Flying Handicap, of six' furlongs, with Arikinui second fancy and Make Up third. Deluge and Arikiuui led the field from a good start, with Arch Arrow handy. Royal Game tailed the fiei I. On the turn Make Up. went to second place, but could not' hold it. Deluge weakened in the run,to. the post, Arikinui and Arch Arrow finishing in that order, with only half a head between them, Make. Up being half' a length'away. , STOKE HANDICAP. . In the Stoke Hack Handicap Projection was made a slightly.better favourite than Tapestry,'with The Dove next in the betting. Dancing Star and Gayshot were scratched, leaving a field of six. Seventh Heaven made the pace from Projection, who went to the lead at the straight entrance,, and ridden hard by L. J. Ellis won by "a length from tfie fast-finishing Atone, who unwound a final spurt to beat Seventh Heaven by a half-length on the post. Tapestry failed to show up. GLEN MEMORIAL. The biggest betting race of the day was the last, the Glen Memorial. Roi" de Val was favourite in a field of v six. Booster was next best backed. Baby Bun led from a smart jump, out, but Make Up came with a burst at the end, being 'well ridden by L. J. Ellis to finish half a length in front of Baby Bun. Arch Arrow made a late run into third place.' Booster tailed the field, being a bad last.
