AT HAWERA

SMART LADY QUEX

AUKORA BOREALIS BIPRESSES

There was some-excellent racing and ■ first'dass performances at Hawera on Saturday when the meeting was concluded in gloriously fine weather before. a ■ good attendance. The' track was again in'excellent order, and has never been better. The totalisator returns for the day were £18,340,; compared with £18,168 10s last year, making a total of £36,357, or an increase of £205 10s. '... .•■-'.■. ■ Possibly the performances that stood out were those of Lady Quex and Aurora Borealis. Lady Quex carried her 9.7 like a- high-class mare. Over the last fifty yards she smothered the opposition. Aurora Borealis gave a good display in the Steeplechase, unwinding a finishing run •which suggested that more steeplechase ■victories.will Come her way this.season. ; The Wairarapa, apprentice >S. Gerrand ■ rode two excellent races on Paiko and 1 Chopin, particularly on the latter.' In this lad and K. Voitre the-Dominion has two of the most promising boys seen out for some years. . . , .The judicial stewards investigated a dispute regarding the services of H. Gray. The connections of Lady Quex and BenKpra claimed him in the Mokoia Handicap, and those of Goldlike and Latakia in the Borough Handicap. It was decided that ,ho was free to ride Lady Quex in the -sprint, as the first day was . the only day he was definitely engaged' for Ben--zora. The owner of Latakia waived his claims and GcMlike was ridden by Gray, who is also engaged lor him at Ellerslie. T. Green secured the ride on. Latakia, which proved a winning one, while: Gray's mount was never in the picture.. ! NGAMUTU HACK HANDICAP. Royal Finance was a hot favourite, with Paiko' paying a good price. Patearoa, Paiko, and Tentcall began smartly, and Paiko and Patearoa Jed down the back from 'Gowan Lea, Anbridge, Royal Finance, Tentcall, and Adventus.- Paiko and Gowan Lea led round the top and to the turn from Tentcall, F'atearoa, Royal Finance, Adventus, and Royal Black. .Royal Finance improved a little going to the turn, but Paiko was going well and stalled, off both Patearoa and Royal' Finance ,in the straight to win by a head'from Patoaro:i, with Royal Finance, two lengths back third. Tentcall was fourth and. Ben .Hur, Adventus, and Gowan Lea next. Paiko had a great run in front and stayed on in good style, being much too good for Patenroa, who had every chance. Royal Finance was not too lucky, early, but had a great run on the rails in the straight. Tentcall, ran a solid race. ■ Statuary was slow away, and that settled his, chance. Bsn Hur was noticed running on at the end from a rear positiou. Gowan Lea showed some pace. MANAWAPOU HURDLES. Glenstar and Royal Acre wore the faySourit.es. Whisogne, Glenstar, and Air Force led <o the first fence, and Air Force . ictl down the straight with Whisogne and Glenstar, and Calithe and Royal Acre •:.nest, with Vivo and Whentianuj in the rear. Royal Acre went to> the dxont five furlongs from home from Whisognc and Whenuanui, then coming Air Force and

Glonstar. Glenstar moved up again racing for the last fence, and was handy to Koyal Acre, Whisogne, and Air Force. Glonstav made au effort in the run homo, but (Jlcmstav beat him otf'by a length ami a quarter, with Air Force four lengths back, just in front of Whisogne and Whenuamii, and Vivo next. , ■ .. , , - Royal Acre had the best of the luck, and was handled to great advantage. It was difficult to understand why Glonstar was pulled back in the middle stages, tor this cost him* very probably first place. Air Force went a particularly good race, and is worth watching. Whisogne showed up well, but Whenuanui was beaten by his weight. Calithe's rider lost an iron. ADAMSON STEEPLECHASE. Airtight was a pronounced favourite. Maidos lost his rider at the fence at the top of the straight, when in the lead, and Waitaunaha led through the straight from Democratic, Airtight, Diana's Lady, Aurora Borealis, and Mauuga, and Brigadier Bill well back. Maunga blundered and lost his jockey at the fence on the turn, and Airtight took charge going down the back from Waitaunaha, Diana's Lad, and Aurora Borealis, who was going up fast. Democratic and Brigadier Bill, were well asteru. Aurora Borealis took charge two fences from home, and beat off both Diana's Lad and Airtight to win by two lengths from Diana's Lad, with Airtight sis lengths back. Waitaunaha was fourth and Democratic and Brigadier' Bill distanced. Aurora Borealis stayed on in great style, and registered^ a good performance. Diana's Lad showed plenty of dash, and 'finished solidly,, while Airtight Joist a. chance for second by running down the last fence. Waitaunaha ran a decent race, ridden by an experienced jockey. Birkbcek was withdrawn after doing his preliminary owing to soreness. ■ IYIOKOIA HANDICAP. : Xady Quex was a hot favourite, with Atholspear the only other -backed to any degree. Benzora and Te Atiawa jumped out first and led down the back from; Melissa, Lady Quex, Gold Dawn, Town, Bird, Hopwood, and Llanore. Benzora and To Atiawa led to the straight from Lady Quex, lle)issa> Llanore, and Hopwood, all; hard on 'their heels. It was a good race; home, .but Lady Quex asserted herself and; came on to win very decisively by a length from' Hopwood, who beat Melissa by half a length. Llanore was fourth and le Atiawa and Atholspear right up, followed after a gap by Benzora and Gold Dawn. • Lady Quex was well ridden and easily superior at the finish, carrying her 9.7 like a high-class mare. Hopwood ran a totally different race from that of the first day, coining from the rear to finish resolutely into second place. Melissa again finished solidly, and Llanore and le Atiawa ran good races. Altholspenr again was rattling on behind the placed horses after being outpaced early. Benzora again failed miserably. Kiosk looked very rough and tailed the field. . SHORTS HACK HANDICAP. Blue Paper was a hot proposition, with Valstreet at a reasonable price. Bon. Eve and Ngawhine jumped out first after Valstreet had delayed the start. Win Acre, Blue Paper, /and Valstreet showed the way across the top from Rule Britannia and Patearoa. Moatoa ran up-at the turn, otherwise the leaders did not change. Valstreet headed off Blue Paper \in > the straiglit to win pulling up by two lengths from Patearoa, who beat Blue Paper by a length and a half. Rule Britannia, Win Acre, and Annoyer (together) were next. Valstreet won very easily, but his barrier habits make him .anything but a betting proposition. Patearoa again stiowed good form, while Blue Paper's collapse was as marked as on the first day. Rule Britannia will improve with these races. Win Acre showed some pace, and Annoyer was running on. ■;.-,■■ ; ■■■■-: ', '■■■-,: ■■■;■ .■;•';, v DAVIDSON HANDICAP- V . Silvermine was another very hot favourite to be beaten, and no excuse could be given for him. Just So led down the straight from The Swell, Yonia, Silvermine, Break o' Day, Chopin, and Ruanui. Just So showed the way down the "back from Yoma and The Swell, with Break o' Day and Silvermine next, and Chopin, Ruanui, and Hipo all handy. There;was not much change as they raced round to the turn, where Ruanui was showing up with Chopin and Silvermiue well beaten. The ' Swell had run to the lead inside a furlong from home, but Chopin was coming fast on the outside. Chopin worried The: Swell out of it, and beat, him by a neck, with Mountain Heath two lengths back third. Just So was fourth and Ruanui, Y.oma; Manly, and Silvermine followed in that order. .;' ' _ . Chopin's success was ' a big surprise, and it was not generally expected that he would beat this field over the distance. In reality he should have returned a large price. The Swell just failed to see out the journey, and had he not pulled hard early might have won. .Silvermine looked a trifle tucked up and was one of the first beaten. Mountain Heath was. going on very solidly in third place,' having come from a long way back. Just So tried to win all the way, and made au excellent attempt. Ruanui west well for a mile, and Yoma ran a really good, race, being prominent all the Way. Manly again finished well. BOROUGH HACK HANDICAP. Goldlike, Merry Melody, Brilliant Light, and Werata were best backed in the biggest pool of the meeting. Merry Melody on the rails was out first, but was cut back at the first turn,-and Latakia rushed to the front to lead the way down the back from Brilliant Light, Potoleer, Remora, Werata, and, Joyspear, with the rest strung out. There was no appreciable change in. the order to the turn, where Latakia ran out to the stand rails. Werata put in a good run, and just failed to get to Latakia, who scored by a head. Joyspear, again finishing on, was a length beck third, with Brilliant Light fourth and Godlike, Crenna Town, Lueretia, and Auctioneer next. . Latakia almost ■lost first money by his tactics, and it is singular that he was allowed to pay a handsome double figure dividend, because of the change of riders. Werata again ran'a fine race and just failed. Joyspear was ; finishing on, and was closer at the finish than at any other stage. Brilliant Light had every chance after looking a likely winner at the fciiyn, from which point he faded out. Ihe seven furlong starting post is badly placed, for the field come to a turn well inside a furlong, with the result that several of the field, including Merry Melody, lost all chance at that point.. Best I'ncnd was again well backed, but was not sighted.
