SPORTS AT BASIN
LERMOND AND GOLDING
BIG MEETING IN FINE
WEATHER
In direct contrast to its run of illluck earlier in the season, tho Wellington Amateur Athletic Centre to-day was again favoured with excellent weather for tho second of the big meetings here in honour of the visit to tho Dominion of champion athletes from overseas. Conditions this afternoon at tho Basin Reserve were well-nigh perfect —an azure-blue, cloudless sky, bright sunshine, with just a.light breezo from the north, and, in addition, splendid tracks.
At the first of these big meetings, tho famous German athlete, Dr. Otto Peltzer, his young compatriot, Gerhard Emton; and the Australian, G. Golding, were the attraction. This afternoon Goiaing was again in action, and Leo Lcrmond, the American champion, was making his first appearance in Wellington. In the South Island these two fine athletes performed brilliantly, and something really "out of the box was expected in the contests in which they took part this afternoon. Opposing them were some of the Dominion's leading athletes of the present time—G. Bayne, J. W. Savidan, J. T. Fleming, T. Pickering, and others. Another notable New Zealand athlete taking part was Randolph Rose, former New Zealand distance champion, on whose performances to-day much interest centred. There was a big attendance of spectators when the meeting commenced, and. everything pointed to an excellent afternoon's sport. Results of events up to the time of going to press were as follow: — 100 yds Handicap.—First heat: K. :O'Council (Byds), 1; F. Stone (9yds), 2; A. Wolply (4iyds), 3. Time, 1.0 3-Ssoc. Second heat: R.
