POSITION AT GISBORNE
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)
GISBORNE, 30th January.
As a sequel to several deputations waiting on him, the Mayor of Gisborne (Mr. D. W. Coleman) telegraphed to the Minister of Public Works stating that approximately 150 men were out of work in the town, and asked the Minister to authorise the placing of additional men on railway works. To-day the Mayor received a reply that the Minister would look into the position immediately and advise at tho earliest possible date.
In consequence of reports to him today the Mayor has written the Minister stating it is reported that seventeen men arrived here yesterday from Botorua, and were being transported to the railway works. The Mayor, commenting to the Minister, stated that this was very unfair to local men.
From inquiries made by a reporter today it is understood these men were sent to railway works from the Auckland Labour Bureau in an effort to alleviate unemployment in the northern centre. Another gang of fifteen men, also from Auckland, it is understood, arrived at the Waikokopu end of the railway on the previous day. All members of both these gangs are single men.
