"TO ALLEVIATE SUFFERING"
The Minister of Health (the Hon. A. J. Stallworthy) this morning said he was very gratified at the news that Mr. and Mrs. T. Dwan, of Wellington, have donated £500 to the Wellington section of the New Zealand branch of the British Empire Cancer Campaign, and they have intimated to the president of the campaign (Dr. J. S. Elliott) their intention to bequeath not less than £10,000 towards the campaign.
The Minister added that this was a very practical demonstration of the interest which Mr. and Mrs. T. Dwan, of Wellington, take in the important matter of cancer prevention in New Zealand. It would be remembered that on the occasion of the public meeting held in Wellington less than a year ago, when tlie New Zealand branch of the British Empire Cancer' Campaign was inaugurated, it was announced that Mrs. T. Dwan had generously donated £1000 for the purpose of cancer research. It »• was difficult to speak too highly of the continued generosity and practical expression of interest in the Work of the New Zealand branch of the British Empire Cancer Campaign shown by Mr. and Mrs. Dwan.
There was no doubt, said the Minister, that this splendid gift would be the means of alleviating the suffering of many people, and would bring comfort and happiness to sufferers from a disease which is unfortunately too prevalent and which has hitherto, after it has passed its earliest stages, proved so intractable to deal with. While verbal recognition could be immediately given, there was no doubt that.in the unspoken thoughts of many patients the generous donors of these timely gifts would have their reward—in the renewed hope that would be given, to sufferers. The splendid example set by Mr. and Mrs. Dwan in their welldirected benevolence could not fail to inspire others to assist in a great campaign which was really worth while.
