A LONG RIDE

None the worse for his experience, apart from a few minor cuts- and bruises, Mr. E. .Breekon, who is in his 73rd year, arrived in Wellington at 4.30 o'clock yesterday afternoon after having cycled from his home about three miles north of Hamilton. Mr. Breekon ett his home at 6.30 a.m. on Thursday last, and each day saw him. make solid progress on his long aiid arduous journey. On the first day he reached Te ituiti, and from that point he went on by stages to Awakino, New Plymouth Hawera, Wanganui, and Palmerston fj. \?° haa h°Ped t0 get "gM through from Palmerston North to Wellington, but between Shannon and Levin ho ran into a severe storm, and took, shelter at the homestead of Mr H. 'M'Kenzie, who treated him most hospitably. From Mr. M'Kenzie's homestead he came right on to Wellington. Mr. Breekon is spending a holiday with friends. at Lower Hutt where he is to. be joined by Mrs. Breekon and the members of his family. Mr. Breckou, who was born at Whitby, Yorkshire, has been keen on cycling all his life, but only once has he taken part in any racing. That was on Ist October, 1927, when at the age of 70 years ho had the temerity—as he puts it—to enter for a road race between Hamilton and Auckland. He was given a start of 1$ hours. He was not placed, but he saw the distance out, and for this performance he received a medal of which he is justly proud. Mr. Breckon states that his bicycle performed very well throughout the journey. " " ". ■- - - .
