A NIGERIAN FUNERAL

In a recent issue of the "Nigerian Daily Times," published at Lagos, there is recorded the death and funeral of Chief Autowoneugi Legg Jack of Kalailiama, Opobo. The burial rites involved the slaughter of several thousancl goats and fowls, and to demonstrate the greatness and wealth of the deceased the following articles were buried with him:—Twenty sovereigns, £180 in silver coins, 2 iron pots (large), 1 brass bath pan, a number of plates and bowls and other crockery, 1 decan, ter of best old rum, S bottlea of whisky, 1 bottle dry gin, 2 large decanters (empty), 1 box of assorted clothing, 2 rugs, 14 pieces real India Madras, 1 large empty jar, 1 mattress, 8 pillows, 3 hats, a quantity of coral beads, and 48,000 Manillas—equal to £400. '

When Time and archaeology dig these things up again they will make ail odd picture of Nigerian life iv 1929 (says the Glasgow "Weekly Herald"). The empty decanters may, indeed, arouse some unjust suspicion.
