HOME OF COMPASSION

A very enthusiastic meeting of ladies and gentlemen to make the necessary preliminary arrangements for the street day appeal in connection with the Home of Compassion was held at the Town Hall yesterday afternoon. Mr. F. J. Oakes presided, and explained the objects of the meeting, which was to come to the aid of the Sisters of Compassion, who were engaged in a great charitable work inaugurated by the late Rev. Mother Aubert. " The City Council had allocated the month of January to the Home, of Compassion for the public street day appeal, and it was their duty that afternoon to set up the necessary committee and appoint heads for the .various street stands. Those present quite understood the laudably work which the sisters are engaged in, and it was unnecessary for him to go into detail, but he urged all sympathisers to do all that was possible in order to make the street day appeal the most successful yet held. All those present formed themselves into a general committee as follows:— Mesdames Oakes, Dwyer, Troy, Radomski, Moloney, Kirby, Murray, Young, N, Crombie, Emerson, Mahony, M' Cormick and Herlihy, Misses Ross, Bown, Fagan, Walker, Sheeran, Fennessy, Quimiell; Cleary, Messrs. John O'Donnell, Martin Moloney, F. J. Oakes J Maxwell, M. O'Kane, and M. J. O'Malley. Mr. F. J, Qakes was appointed chairman, and jt was decided to hold the street day appeal on Friday, 31st January.

W, Gibbes, Bplton, and Hickmott; Kirkealdie . and Stains-—Mrs Herlihy; G.P,O.—St. Mary's branch of the St. Vincent de Paul Society; Bank of New Zealand, Lambton quay—Mes dames Sol. Myers and Pqw; Boulcott street—Mrs. J. E. Gamble; Courtenay plaee-^-Mesdaineß Oakes, Dwyer, and Missos Whelans; Newtqwn^Mr. M. J. O'Malley and Miss Sheeran; Kilbirnie —Mrs. Raviomski; Island Bay-r-Misses Fagan, O "Began, and Ryan; Bank of New Zealand^ Cuba street, and Hutt and Petone wijl be allqcateil later. The Rev. Mother M. Ceeojia, Mother Aubert's successor, and Rev. Sisters An, gela, Claver, and Gerard, were present at the meeting, and expressed their gratitude to all present for their support, and above all for the enthusiastic manner in which they had responded to the call for help, and they felt confident that with such an auspicious start the efforts on the street day would be most successful.
