SLIPS AND WASHOUTS

AKATARAWA ROAD

BLOCKED FOR FORTNIGHT

Heavy though the rain was in Wellington, it was evidently more so on the Akatarawa Saddle, as the road from Upper Hutt to Waikanae .is blocked by slips and wash-outs, and the Public Works Department estimates that it will take a fortnight to open the road again. There are two fairly serious -wash-outs and nine slips reported so far. The wash-outs are near the thirteen-mile peg on the Hutt side of the hill, on which side there are also some slips, and on the Waikanae side there are more slips. The Public Works Department is arranging to send out men from both the Hutt and the Waikanae ends, and will clear the road as soon as is possible, but it is-anticipated that even if no more slurry comes down, a fortnight's work will be needed to re-open the road for traflie.
