WELLINGTON LUCKY

WEATHER CLEARS UP

A factor, small ia itself, but with far-reaching effect on the weather, especially around Cools Strait and on the East Coast, has made its appoaranee in to-day's meteorological charts. This is the development of a secondary centre in connection with the intense depression-which, after dominating the Dominion's weather, is now passing away eastward; Yesterday's forecast, made from the available data, anticipated rather the reverse of pleasant conditions for to-day 'a. air pageant, but the development of this secondary centre, which could not be foreseen yesterday, has made all the difference, although live to sis miles up, Mgher than aiiy of the airmen will be.required to go, the wind is blowing with the stupendous velocity pf 110 miles an hour from a due westerly direction. The pressure gradient over New Zealand is still steep, however, and winds are strpng and squally, The secondary centre mentioned above has caused the southwesterly winds which set in last night to veer again to the west or north-west in and around Cook Strait, ancTit has also been responsible for a rapid clearance in the weather locally and on the East Coast. Over practically tho whole of the Dominion the weather has been squally and unsettled. Rain has faljeh in most districts, falls being mainly light. In the far south, however, heavy rain has fallen, and Qtago has had severe conditions with hail and snpw, The cold snap has been responsible for snow on high levels and for.a severe frost in. Canterbury and Otago. / " To-day's forecast is for westerly winds at first about Cook Strait, and for moderate to strong Bouth-wester-lies elsewhere. The wind strength is likely to be moderate to strong gener-. ally? gale force being reached in places. Unsettled, changeable, and squally weather is still probable. Showers may be expected, with snow on the high levels of the South Island. Temperatures will be cold, with inland frosts in tho South Island.
