Suggestions Invited. A "suggestion bW" is to tro installed at the' Auckland Town Hall. A bonus iyill 1)6 awarded to a. City Council employee who makes a suggestion that is found worthy of adoption. Easy to Make Mistakes. How easy it is to make a mistake was instanced in Mprrinsville last week, when i, certain well-known resident was commenting with horror that the wife of a Cabinet Minister could sit in public smoking a cigarette, and "with a long cigarette holder at that," says an exchange. His listener commented that in these days it was not unladylike for women tq smoke, and there was no reason if .the Hqn, H. Atmore h wife wished to smoke that she should not. H-~cver, a few minutes later it was found that the lady was not Mrs. Atmpre. Later in the day the statement was turned into a good jqke. for one of the hearerg met the Minister and recited the story./"Wen," the Minister said, "fortunately or unfortunately, it cannot be true, for I have not yet met Mrs. Atmore." The Minister is a bachelor. .. ....

A Poser for Flyers. "I had been asking the flying pupils, 'Supposing you are flying across country, 6000"feet up in the air, and the engine suddenly cuts out, what is the first thing you are going to do?' " said Wing-Commander Grdnt-Dalton at the Chamber of Commerce luncheon yesterday. ."Each one of them said exactly the same thing, 'Look out for" a suitable landing ground.' But I said they wero all wrong. They had got that suitable landing place in mind before the engine conked out. A pilot flying across country always had a suitable landing ground in his minds-eye, and the correct answer was, 'Find out why the blessed engine has stopped, and see if you cannot start it again.' " Indigent Natures. A suggestion that the money to be paid to Maoris as compensation for lands confiscated after the Maori War should be ear-marked to reimburse hospital -boards for treating indigent Natives was made at a meeting of the Waikato Hospital Board (states the "New Zealand Herald"). The chairman, Mr. Campbell Johnstone, remarked that the money would go "to encourage extravagance among the Natives." He added that the Government proposed to give them £15,000 in addition to grants already made. It was resolved to ask the Government how it was proposed to expend the compensation money to bo paid to the Natives. Valuable Stamps. " A valuable collection of stamps, including a large number of the early issues of Great Britain and New Zealand, has been presented to the Christchurch Philatelic Society by Mr. Claude Ferrier, of ■ St. Martins the "Press"). Mr. Ferrier, who is an honorary life-member of the society, has been a philatelist since his boyhood days, and he has made a specialty' of collecting the early issues of stamps-of Great Britain and New Zealand, his collection the latter being particularly strong in the first issue, bearing a full face representation of Queen Victoria. The wish has often been expressed by Mr. Ferrier that the collection which he had formed ever so many years, and which he has prized so greatly, should be kept intact after his death, and it ig understood that a condition of the gift is that it must be kept in trust by the society, and not be sold under any circumstances. The value of the collection is estimated at several thousand pounds. It is contained in a number of volumes, and consists of many thousands of stamps, representative of most of the countries of the world. Although he has been a stamp collector for a great many years, Mr. Ferrier has made it a practice never to sell a stamp once it has come into his possession. He has, however, given a great deal of encouragement to junior collectors, many of whom he has assisted with gifts of duplicates. x *
