AT RICCARTON

CHIDES CANTERBURY CUP

: JOCKEY CLUB HANDICAP TO \ FULL FEATHER

(By Telegraph, from "Vedette.")

The first decent day o£ the carnival ■week in Ghristehurch was provided at Riccarton yesterday, the warm sun and an absence of wind being appreciated by racegoers. There was a, good attendance for the off-day of the meeting. The totalisator returns were £44,360 compared with £39,541 last year. Chide, perfectly ridden by B. H. Morris, had no difficulty in winning the Canterbury Chip. He pulled up well. Concentrate, although "sore, ran a gallant race. Be leaves for home to-niglit. The Jockey Club Handicap provided a boil-over, Full Feather coming from almost the tail of the field to return his handful of investors a great dividend. Sir George Clifford's horses, Disorder and Full l-'enther, have returned two of. the three liig dividends of the meeting. Eaglet scored another classic victory in the Oaks, making her fourth this spring. She was much too brilliant for the opposition over the last half-mile. There were four double-figure dividends o£ a total of over £72. SUBURBAN HANDICAP.

The Quarterdeek-Swoopalong bracket was backed down to a very short price, the winner, Some Toff,, paying only a moderate price. Sivoopalong and_ The Viscount jumped out first, and Nincompoop and Swoopalong led down-'the back from Some Toff, The Viscount, Royal Game, Quarterdeck, and Aberfeldy. DumWane ran round his field across the top, and was clear at the half-mile from Nincompoop, Some Toff, Royal Game, The Viscount, and Quarterdeck. The order ■was the same into the straight. Dum'Wanp was beaten two furlongs from Tiome, where Some Toff took charge to win by two lengths from the fast-finishing Quarterdeck. -. Aberfeldy was half a 3ength away third, half a length in front of Dumblane.' The • Viscount and Haze ■were next.

Some Toff scored rather easily at the finish. Quarterdeck appqared~to be a Trifle unlucky. Aberfeldy finished well, and Dumblane was not well ridden to finish fourth. Haze was always ill the ruck, and did not improve materially, and The Viscount ran only a fair race. ' SPRING NURSERY HANDICAP.

Both Kerbside and Princess Betty were at odds on. Merry Peel, Kerbside) Princess Betty, and Parysia were the leaders on to the course proper. Merry Pell was the first to drop out, and Priucess Betty came away over the last furlong, and Pharaoh and Ball Dress came through - fast. Princess Betty won easily by two lengths and Pharaoh got up to beat Ball Dress by a neck with. Parysia, Kerbside, and Merry Pee! in a, bunch next.

-The winner registered a very smooth performance, and she was easily superior on the'day'. Pharaoh, a shapely colt by ■■Shambles from Palestrina, "will develop into a really good horse later. This is Palestrina's first foal. Ball Dress also ran a useful race, anil Parysia and Kerbside showed pace. Merry Peel ran a fair race.

OTAIO PLATE,

Talisker was a liot ■favourite with the winner, Dolomite, at a longish doublefigure quote. " Dolomite, Avro, Amor, Lathi Quarter, Money Mine, and Talisker', was the order out of the barrier, with King's Jest last to move. At the sixfurlong barrier Dolomite and Latin Quarter led Money Mine, Amor, Avro, King's Jest, ,and Talisker. King's Jest went \ip to Dolomite and Latin Quarter at the half-mile, and they turned for home first from Money Mine and'Avro. Dolomite, Latin Quarter, Avro. and King's Jest were all under the whip a furlong'from home, and in a punishing finish Dolomite beat Latin Quarter by a head with Avro half a length back third, just in front of King's Jest. Money Mine and Talisker were next.

Dolomite, the English-bred horse, purchased in Sydney by Mi-. H. Murphy and trained by H. B. Lorigan at Trentham, scored his first success in- this country. He is a stylish looking customer, and stayed out the ten furlongs well. Latin Quarter was not too well ridden at the finish, and it looked as if lie should have won. Avro also was unlucky, and Kings Jest rah a fine race after beiii" last away. Money Mine and Talisker ran fair races, but Talisker should have done better. Malmsey showed up at the turn but did not finish on. CANTERBURY CUP. Chide in the field of five was at extravapant odds-on. Count Cavour led out, but iloylake soon assumed the role of pacemaker, and led past tlie stands by four Jengths from Count Cavour and Concentrate, with Chide and Seatown next. HoyJake and Coujit Cavour led down the back just, ahead of Chide and Seatown, with Concentrate on their heels. The field bunched at the false rail, but only momentarily, for Chide shot put clear and won, easing up, by two lengths. A good battle for second saw Concentrate beat Seatown by half a length, with Hoylake two lengths further back, and Count Cavour ten lengths last. There was a slow pace early, as usual, the first, six furlongs taking lmin 22sec, mile and a quarter 2min 14 l-ssec, mile and a half 2min 37sec, and mile and threequarters 3min 6 3-ssec. Chide won like a high-class horse. Concentrate stayed on particularly well. He was a trifle sore before the race. Seatown ran on surprisingly well, and battled out.the second place honours. Hoylake and Count Cavour dropped out completely in the final struggle. JOCKEY CLUB HANDICAP. , Toxeuma and Panther carried big investments, with Full Feather paying the price of the day. Consent and Gold Cure jumped out first from Toxeuma, Red Heckle, and Silver Paper, with White Fang and Full Feather slow away. Gold Cure led at the half-mile from Consent, Red Heckle, Toxeuma, White Fang (moving up round his field), Silver Paper, and Panther. Gold Cure led into the straight from Consent, Red Heckle, Arrow Lac], and Toxeuma. Arrow Lad looked the winner nearing home, but Full Feather came fast on the outside and beat him by a length and a half. Silver Paper was a length away third, with Toxeuma fourth and Gold Cure,' Consent, Red Heckle, and Pride next, and Panther last. ..

Full' Feather registered a remarkable performance, for he was one of the last into the straight and won going away. Arrow Lad showed his first flash of real form at the meeting, and ran a very creditable second. Silver Paper, who looked much improved, ran a good race into third place. Toxeunia's'fourth was a creditable effort. Gold Cure and Consent stopped over the i last part. White Fang and Panther rau badry. OAKS STAKES.

Eaglet was a fraction more at odds-on than Chide, the Canterbury Cup winner, with. Duellona giving a much better return for second. Speedlight, Eaglet, and Sapient led Stately out of the straight, and Speedlight led Eaglet at the mile from Stately, Sapient, and Duellona. Speedlight and Eaglet led into the straight from Stately, Duellona, and Disorder. Eaglet came away a furlong from home, and although Duellona. threw out a good

challenge Eaglet held her off to win by a length. Disorder, finishing on, was two lengths back third, with Stately half a, length back fourth. Speedlight and Sapient were some distance back. Eaglet always held a good position, and although she had nothing in reserve she won well. Duellona, as expected, was sticking on well at the finish, and Disorder came with a great rattle. Stately had every chance,- but was not good enough. Speedlight was " beaten at the end of a mile and a quarter. The first half-mile was run in 54 2-ssec, and the mile in. lmin 45 3-asec.

ASHLEY HANDICAP.

Make Up was backed down to a short price, his second dividend. being a losing one. Solgele led out from Blue Metal, Sailing Home, Make Up, and Starshooter. Solgele led round the top to the turn from Blue Metal, Starshooter, Swifti-ay, The Bailiff, and Make Up. ; The Bailiff, Starshooter, and Make Up joined the leaders at the false rail, with Starshooter doing best momentarily. Then The Bailiff and Make Up came away to fight out the finish, The Bailiff scoring by half a head. Starshooter was two lengths away third, with Master Clarence and Blue Metal right up and Swiftray heading the rest sonje distance back. The apprentice on The Bailiff, -W. Broughton, was a trifle more, vigorous than Make Up's rider, and' this, turned the scale in the final struggle. It looked as if Make Up should have won. Starshooter ran a decent race, and Master Clarence finished on. Blue Metal showed Jiace, but failed to stay. AVON HANDICAP.

Roi de Val was favourite in a good belting race, and the winner, Caterpillar, came home at a' double-figure price. Caterpillar took up the running from the jump off from Royal Saxon, Gold Tinge, Atholspear, Keddar, Silver Coot, and Subdivision. Gold Tinge broke a blood-vessel at the - half-mile and dropped out of the race, and Caterpillar turned for home with a decided lead from Royal Saxon; SubdiviJsion, and Keddar. Caterpillar did not stop as .expected in the run home, and beat Keddar by two lengths. Night Lad, who finished^well, was a length away third,-with Royal Saxon half a len-th back-fourth. Taboo, finishing on,, was mth,_ and then came Buoyant and Subdivision. Caterpillar, with a reputation for speed ■saw out the'seven furlongs in great style. and Keddar, finishing with one of his characteristic runs, was as pronounced a second. Night Lad ran a fine race into third pjace. Royal Saxon had every chance, and failed to stay on. Taboo finished very well.
