"EARLY WELLINGTON"

There is on view at Whitcoiube's, for a| few days, a de luxe copy of Mr. Louis E. Ward's book, "Early Wellington," which is to be presented to His Majesty the King, in December next. Pages 433 and 434 of the book will serve_ to remind the King and Queen of their visit (as the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York), to Wellington twenty-eight years ago, ■as - these pages contain the programme of events, comprising their landing at the Queen's Wharf on the 18th June, 1901, and arrival at the Government House (now portion of Parliament Buildings), where Hiß Royal Highness inspected the Guard of Honour, comprising part of the Wellington City Rifles, under the command of Captain W. G. Duthie.

During the visit several important functions eventuated, namely: The laying of the foundation-stone (on the reclamation) of the Town Hall, presentation of South African. War Medals, reception and dinner at Government House, Friendly and Trade Societies' addresses received, display of fireworks from the hulks in the harbour, Royal excursion by railway, marine explosion, and laying the- foundation-stone of the new railway offices.
