EARTHQUAKE LESSONS
An instructive lecture was given last evening to the students of the building, department of: the Wellington technical College by Mr. A. S. Mitchell,' architect and .engineer, .one of the committee experts appointed to investigate and report to the Government on the-behaviour under, earthquake, action of structures in th» affected regions. Mr. Diet presided. The lecturer first deal with the nature-.and extent of seismic disturbances and the meanadopted to record them; he then, with the aid ot lantern slides; took his hearers on" tour, _ visiting the various : types "of buildings in the devastated areas; '-'-■--"' 2-.--Practically'■'■ all: the ■■ many excellent slides screened to show-the effect -of the shakes had some structural lesson, which, was explained in a most'interesting manner. The students' appreciation was indicated by their close attention throughout the lecture and hy their applause.
