EMPLOYEES' BEQUEST
PAYMENT OP APPRENTICES

DTJNEDIN, This Day. The payment of wages to apprentices during their time in military camps was -discussed at the Arbitration Court today, when Mr. Cookson, on behalf of the employers, asked for an unqualified right'to deduct wages.
Mil Cookson stated that those employers who responded to the Government's appeal to take a full quota of apprentices suffered the most hardship. Whatever benefit might accrue from military training it was State benefit, and the full cost should bo State-borne. The Defence Department paid trainees 4s per day, and an employer was compelled to pay a full wage in addition. The justice of the claim was shown in the fact that the Government Departments deducted from their employees' salaries the pay received by them from the Defence Department.
Mr. .Justice Erazer said that the Court would withhold its decision until similar cases were heard elsewhere.
