THEFT FROM MOTOR-GAR
"This class of offence is becoming pretty frequent," said Chief-Detective Lopdell in the Magistrate's Court yesterday after stating that Harold Vivian Costley, a steward and waiter, aged 33, in company with another man, had stolen an overcoat/valued at £4 15s, from a motorcar in Jervois quay. Costley pleaded guilty to the theft.
Mr. Lopdell said that the complainant only left the car for about ten minutes, and when lie came back the coat was gone. The theft was committed in daylight, and the coat had been pawned for Bs. Costley's companion was before the Court yesterday and was remanded until to-morrow.
. The accused said he was under the influence of liquor when the coat' was taken. He would be willing to take out a prohibition order.
Mr. E. Page, S.M., imposed a fine of £5, and also ordered that the accused pay Bs, the amount unlawfully obtained on the coat, in default two months' imprisonment.
Costley's associate, William Ttobert Best, a steward, aged 42, appeared be-fore-the Court this morning. He was also fined £5 in default 21 days imprisonment.
