THE NEW TUNNEL
BLAST-ING AT NIGHT
Complaint is being mado by residents of Hataitai within some distanco of tho new tunnel approach work of the noiso of fairly heavy blasting during the night, and it is suggested by correspondents that if blasting is necessary the council might at least get it over in the daytime. A "Post" reporter who mado inquiries to-day was told that some of the heavier charges had been fired at n ->Sht> generally at tho chango of shifts, when the ground was clear of workmen, but actually tho louder noise was from small charges which wore fared to widen the bottom of the drilled holes into a bulb for the reception of the main charge. These shots wont off sharply, whereas the heavier charges rather rumbled off than exploded. The work, it was added, had .to go ahead with the least possible delay in order that the contractors could commence tunnelling work on the date agreed on early m December.
