WADESTOWN SCHOOL

MINISTER'S VISIT

The Hon. H. Almore (Minister of Education) paid an official visit to the Wadestown School on Wednesday morning. He was accompanied by Mr. R. A. Wright, M.P., and Messrs. Nicholls, Stewart, and Powell (Education Board), and A. Parlane (chairman of the school committee). The party, on arriving at the school, was joined by Mesdames Thompson and Smith (Home nnd School Association) and Messrs Ongley and Peebles (school committee). Some 120 senior pupils were crowded in one classroom, where Mr. At' more was introduced to them by the headmaster, who deputed the duty of specchmaking to several of his pupils. Prior to lie speeches, Miss Mary Connor presented Mr. Atmore .with a beautiful bouquet. .Miss G'.ven Hobyns (Standard (5) expressed, m behalf of her schoolmates, their pleaiiire at having with them the Minister of Education. She dwelt at some length on lip activities of the school, and drew the Minister'^ attention to the growing needs i!l" the school. Misses Dorothy Grainger and Dulcie Stafford also voiced the wishes of the scholars. l

Mr. R. A. Wright,. M.1., expressed his pleasure at being privileged again to visit llio school. Although he was politically opposed to Mr. Athiorc they were united in regard to education. Party politics were quite outside the question of education, and every support would be given by all parties to the Minister in his efforts to promote the welfare of the vising gennation. He wished the children every success in their studies.

Mr. Nicholls, representing the Education Board, briefly addressed the children. He congratulated them ou their fine healthy appearance, and trusted that the end of the year would bring success to everyone. Mr. Parlaue advised the Minister of the work the committee had already done with the" assistance of the parents in the improvement of tho school and its environment. The district was growing rapidly, with a consequent rapidly-increasin" attendance, which necessitated further improvements, and he appealed to tbe Minister to give sympathetic and favourable consideration to the requests of the committee.

Mr. Atmore congratulated the girls who had so nicely welcomed him. He was very favourably impressed . with their clear articulation 'and'enunciation, which, he saia, reflected great credit ou their training. He advised the children to make the best use of their time at school To mark his first visit, to the school, the children, at the request of Mr. Atmore were given a holiday.
