FOR THE TINIES

Beaker was a very, very proud little bullfinch. He was too proud to play with other little birds for fear pf spoiling his. bright feathers. , Every day he polished his feathers till they shone and puffed himself out. till you would think he would burst. When little Brownie Sparrow asked him to come and play, Beaker was so angry that he pushed him into a muddy puddle, and said: "Play with you, indeed! You're only a common sparrow. As if I would play with you!" So you see, he wasn't a nice little bird at all. One day as Beaker was strutting along the top of the fence, puffing out his feathers and cocking his head for everyone to see, he did not notice that the fence ended in a pond. His head was cocked so high that he did not see that he was going over the edge untiI—SPLASH! ! ! He could no' swim and his feathers were so wet now lhat he could not fly. He just struggled and rapidly began to sink. If he had kept his head he could have caught hold of one of the lough blades of grass overhanging the pond, but he completely lost his head. 1 Down—down—down he went into the green, glassy depths again. He rose to the top and had a blurred idea of everyone looking at him. Just what he had always wanted, but not now! Then little Brownie the Sparrow flew down and pulled and tugged and, with the help of his other playmates, got him out, dripping and gasping. Beaker was now very sorry he had been nasty to Brownie and said so, but Brownie readily forgave him and played with him every day. Wadestown. * . "PETER PAN."
