MANY NARROW ESCAPES

HASTINGS, 23th July A spectacular bolt occurred at Hastings asfc night, wheu a horse attached to a milk lloat containing tho owner, his little boy and girl, cud another man, took fright near btortford Lodge, and continued its mad career to Hiivelock North. Early in the career the other man, to save the girl took her m his arms and jumped clear without injury to either beyond bniiscs and s(iock. Many narrow escapes occurred at intersections, the horse managing to clear the Heretaimga street railway crossing less than two minutes before a passenger express train came along. The runaway continued its course, and, Hearing Havelock North, the owner lifted his son off the low float on to the road, and soon after got clear himself, both without serious hurt. The horse" negotiated the Havelock North Bridge successfully, and ultimately was brought to a halt in the centre of the township.
