DETERIORATION
LAND PROBLEMS
The problem, of the deteriorated lauds was considered at the New Zealand Farmers' Union Conference yesterday. Mr. D. E. L. Kose (Taranaki) referred to the decrease iv area of land being farmed, and contended that land should be fully matured- before fresh areas were opened.
Mr. J. Livingstone (Dannevirko) said that if the Government had confidence in the land they should have coufience to put up the money to bring it back.
Mr. K. W. Dalrymple (Wellington) moved the following remit: "That as tho Farmers' Union views tho question as a serious and national matter, the Dominion executive be urged to solicit the aid of the Government to provide finance to bring the deteriorated land back to a state of production, such finance to provide for roading, fencing, grassing, and stocking." Mr. W. Boyd (Auckland) said that the problem required a combination of finance, intelligence, and hard work. The security, lie pointed out, was not available on which to raise additional finance. The position was curious from an economic standpoint. First the money had to bo spent to get the security. The problem was one to be viewed from a national standpoint. Mr. J. Cocker (South Taranaki) agreed that first it should be ascertained whether the land was worth whilo being brought in. Mr. W. J. Poison agreed that the whole thing bristled with difficulties .thousands of acres of former bush country had goue back, and moreover were still going back, but the problem had to be tackled. The remit was carried.
