CHEMICAL PROCESSES
A meeting of the Chemical Section of the Wellington Philosophical Society was held recently at Victoria College. Two interesting papers were presented before a good attendance of members and students.
.The.first paper on the determination of salt hydrolysis by means of the quinhydrone electrode, was given by Mr. N. A. Harris. The speaker described the applications of this electrode and its advantages in certain eases for determining the hydrogen ion concentration of solutions. This measurement is now widely used in industry for estimating the acidity of solutions in the control of chemical processes. In the next paper, entitled "lodine content of soils and waters in certain districts of New Zealand," Mr. R. L. Andrew gave a critical survey of the methods used in determining very minute amounts of iodine arid described the method finally adopted by him in his investigations on the iodine content of soils and waters from a wide variety of districts in the North Island of New Zealand. The results of this research were very interesting and should prove valuable when considered with the incidence of goitre in those districts. Both, speakers were thanked for their addresses.
