FREE AMBULANCE OPPOSED

'CHEISTCHtIkcH,; This DayV : Opposition to the'adoption in Christ-: church of a free-ambulance service, as established in Wellington, was. voiced at; yesterday's: meeting of- the Christ-] church Tramway; Board, when a notification concerning the "proposed ser-: vice was received without any action.' being taken.' ■- ■ ■!■■■-■■. ■. ; ; .;■ The chairman, Mr. J. A. JTlesher, said that there was.nothing in this district to necessitate a change." In Wellington it cost twice as much to run ■ the service as it cost in Brisbane. Large amounts had been contributed by local bodies'in Wellington. The cost of each ambulance in Wellington was about £550, compared with £350 in Christchurch. : The salaries were much greater in .Wellington, and the expenses were much heavier than in Christehnrch, where there were two ambulances which coat about £1300 a year. He thought that there was' no occasion for the board to go any further in the'matter. The letter was received. . ; '-
