(Beceived 2nd May, 1 p.m.)
BERLIN, Ist May. Late to-night the situation took a very serious turn in the northern quarter of the city, mostly inhabited by the working classes. Two thousand to three thousand Communists, armed with firearms, clubs, and stones, under cover of darkness, poured into the main thoroughfare, Pankstrasse, and erected barricades with surprising swiftness. Five hundred police opened fire and repeat- ' edly charged the barricades. It was only after an hour's fighting with tho aid of armoured cars that the barricades were captured. The Communist ambulance men were soon overwhelmed by the number of victims they had to carry from the firing line. Their casualties are not known. Three polica were killed and twenty-four wounded. Fighting has . also broken out in the South-Eastern parts of the city, which are plunged in darkness.
