"FLOGGED TO DEATH"

SUMMER TIME QUESTION

FARMERS' OPPOSITION

(By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evenint Post.") DUNEDIN, This Day, The Otago provincial executive of the Now Zealand Farmers' Union yesterday considered a circular from the Dominion executive which asked for an expression on the following alternative j proposals in connection with daylight saving: (a) No interference with true time; (b) true time being advanced one hour from November till March as was done two years ago; (c) true time being advanced one hour the whole year round; (d) true time being advanced half an hour from November till March; (c) true time being advanced half an hour the whole year round. Tho chairman, Mr. J. D. Evie, said this question was being flogged to death from one end of the country to thr* other. Ho did not know if the union could do anything to stop daylight saving. He thought the majority of the people seemed to want it, especially in the towns. It had been shown over and over again that it was detrimental to the interests of the producer, but evidently he was a secondary consideration, and as long as he kept up the exports it did not matter what conditions he worked under. Personally he was opposed to daylight saving. Mr. J. Preston said he was opposed to it, but he thought it would be better to agree to half an hour. If they were not careful they would got the whole hour put on, and that was undoubtedly detrimental to the fanners. By concentrating on the half-hour they would be meeting the other side, although it meant a big inconvenience to the dairy farmers. On tho motion of Mr. Preston the following was carried: "That we realise that the townspeople are demanding daylight saving and that we as an executive oppose any increase beyond half an hour, this to operate from November till March."
