TILLED PARTY RISKS

INSURANCE PREMIUMS

The scale of premiums payable under Ihe Motor Vehicles lntsurancc (Third Party Risks) legislation or hist year is set out in regulations published iv the ""Gazette" kst night. Tho method o£ classification of vehicles differs slightly from the schedule sketched by the Minister in explaining his Bill in the House of representatives, but the premiums remain substantially us ho indicated them. A plea was lodged some time ago that the premium of 15s proposed for a motor-cycle, as compared with £ 1 for a private car, was disproportionate, and that a reduction should be made. This proposal, however, has not been given effect to. As the Minister explained in outlining the legislation, the premiums have been fixed experimentally, subject to alteration later on when it is seen.how the new law works out in practice. The. schedule of premiums now iixed is as follows:— £ s. d. Motor-cycles 0 15 0 | Hearses and mourning couches ..100 Tractors and traction engines .. 10 0 Private motor-cars used wholly or in part for the purposes of any trade or business (but not including cars used by medical practitioners or by religious or social workers) 1 10 0 Other private motor-cars 1 0 0 Trade motors .' 1 10 0 I'ire Brigade motor vehicles — 2 0 0 Motor-coaches '■•■■ 3 0 0 Public motor-cars designed to seat not more than 7 persons, including driver , "10 0 Public motor-ears designed to seat more than 7 persons, including driver 7 10 0 For every additional person above 7, but not exceeding £10 10s in any case ...... 1 10 0 Motor omnibuses designed to scat 10 persons, including driver ... 12^0 0 Motor omnibuses designed to scat more than 10 and not more than 26 persons, including driver 12 0 0 For every additional person above 10 1 0 0 Motor omnibuses designed to seat ■more than 26 persons, including driver 28 0 0 For every additional, person above 2(3 0 10 0 Trailers >■■ • • 0.5 0 Manufacturers and dealers' motor vehicles 1 10 0 Any motor vehicle not otherwise . specified '1 10 0 INSURING PROCEDURE. % The regulations require companies which are willing to undertake this class oE insurance business to advise the 'Registrar of Motor Vehicles at Wellington to that effect. Sales or other disposals of vehicles have to bo notified to tho companies, the former owners being required to specify the names and addresses of -the purchasers, the registration numbers of the vehicles, and their class and make. Failure to give this notice renders offenders liable to a fine o£ £5. Where the registration of a vehicle is cancelled because it has been destroyed or has become permanently useles or permanently removed from New Zealand, the owner, on satisfying the company of the cancellation, is enabled to receive a refund equal to one-twelfth of- the premium for every complete month between tho date of tho happening leading to cancellation and the end of the term of the insurance contracts. Similarly, where a contract is entered into for a period of less than a year the full premium may be reduced by one-twelfth for every complete month, under the twelve.
