STATE IN BUSINESS
(To the Editor.)
Sir,—l will be glad of your indulgence to comment as briefly as possible upon your correspondent, "Onlooker's," letter in last evening's "Post." If "Onlooker" correctly designates himself, he has assumed a most appropriate norn de plume under which to write, but unfortunately one that in the circumstances will not add much (if any) .weight-to the subject matter taken up. Being merely an "Onlooker" does not allow your correspondent to become au fait with the problems of industry or their remedy. It is the inside information acquired through being actually "in the game" that counts, and not observations made whilst rail-sitting. "Onlooker's" supposition that I must have overlooked the fact that the late Seddon Government (with which Sir Joseph Ward was at the time associated) was responsible for the introduction of Government competition in insurance and other directions mentioned by "Onlooker," does not prove that the Seddon Government any more than the late Reform Government was right in embarking upon such .enterprises. Sir Joseph' Ward haa only recently asseverated his intention of assisting the secondary industries of the Dominion, and it is safely to be accepted that Sir Joseph has the vision to see that the various enterprises engaged in by the Seddon as well as the late Reform' Government are in many cases inimical to th« best interests of the Dominion, as these have not achieved the results that sponsort had reason to expect of them.— Tarn, etc. MANUFACTURER.
