GIRL'S THEFT FROM FRIEND
The theft, of ,a suitcase, a pair of shoes,. an overcoat, . and three , frocks, of a total value. of £4 10s, was admitted to'Mr.'XVK. Hunt in the Magistrate's Court to-day by a young girl aged 17. :
Senior Sergeant Butler said that the complainant and the accused occupied the same room in a boarding-house in the city. On 7.th March the complainant went away in tho morning, and on roturning found the accused was missing as well as a suitcase containing the articles mentioned in tho charge. The .accused, when arrested yesterday, told tho polico that she and another girl went to Trentham to look for work, and she. took the clothes so that she could wear them if she got work. "This girl .has not beeu very long out from the Old Country," concluded 'the senior sergeant. "She has only one relative 'hero, a married sister, who cannot do anything with her. She has been sleeping out, sleeping in railway carriages, knocking about with boys, sleeping in motor-cars, and the problem is now what to do with her." •
On the recommendation of the Probation Officer (Miss Simpson), the Magistrate admitted the accused to probation for twelve months, a condition being that she remains in .the Salvation Atmy Home until she obtains work. "I'll suppress'her name, seeing sho's only seventeen," added Mr. Hunt.
