PARENTS' ASSOCIATION

The fourth annual meeting of the Wellington East Girls ' College Parents' Association was held last night at the college, Captain Whiteford ' presiding. There were about eighty parents present. ■ „.':'.

The animal report showed that' the membership for the year had totalled 93. There, were gust on 400 girls at the college, and the executive felt that wider support should be given the association, the aims and objects of which were to. generally improve conditions both inside and outside the college. The executive would like to. see every parent enrolled as .a member pf the association; £700 would now be available for the formation of '•■tennis 'courts, entrance steps, fencing, and other, improvements that would greatly enhance the general appearance of the grounds in front of- the college.' Improvements inside and outside the school authorised by the executive during tlioyoar wore shown, as follows:—Library and prizes, £38 3s; tree planting, £5 7s 9d; piano and stand; £47- 10s; tennis courts, etc., £350 ; sundries, £2 0s 6d; total, £443 Is 3d. The report specially mentioned the splendid work done by the Ladies' Auxiliary during the year. .On them fell the hard work of raising the necessary funds for the. many improvements wanted. Thanks were 'expressed to the College Board of Governors, also to Miss Batham (principal), and her staff, who among other things had raised £100\by means of a concert. Tho report was adopted. • ■ During tho evening Mrs. Holdsworth, on behalf of the Ladies' Auxiliary, presented Mrs. Duncan, the retiring secretary, with a handsome powder bowl, saying that Mrs. Duncan had been secretary to the auxiliary ever since its inception, and the success of the auxiliary had been mainly due to her efforts. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the retiring president, Captain Whiteford, and regret was expressed that business ties made it" impossible for him to accept office'for a further term. „ ' •

Miss Batham. thanked the Ladies' Auxiliary, parents, and executive for all they had done for the college, and expressed appreciation of the many improvements which hind been effected. On the motion of Mrs. Duncan, it was decided to amend the constitution so as to make tho president and secretary of the Ladies' Auxiliary ex offlcio members of the executive 'of the association; . -

Songs were given by Mr. Jenkins and Mr. Wilson and a recitation by Mrs. Castle, and were greatly appreciated, as was the excellent supper supplied by the Ladies' Auxiliary.

The following officers were elected:— President, Mr. T. M'Laren; vice-presi-dents, Mrs T. Forsyth, Mr. T. J. Jenkins, Mr. F. Holdsworth; committee, Mesdames Holdsworth, Down, Chadfleld, Lancaster, White, and Halley, Messrs. King, Murphy, Jackson, Whiteford, Maisey, Sinel, Turner,- Proctor, and Kean. .

An executive meeting of the Howard League for Penal Reform was held this morning prior to the general meeting this' afternoon, Mr. A. J. Stratford, J.P., presiding over an attendance of delegates from Dunediii, Oamaru, Christchurch, Wellington, New Plymouth, Hamilton, and Anekland.
