Born oil 30tlr May, 1871, he was .the' son of the late Mr. Felix M'Carthy, a Maori war veteran, who died last year. Mr. Eugene M'Carthy entered the. Government Printing and. Stationery Department' in- February, ISS4; and during his 45 years as a member of tho Public Service, had varied experienco with tho Government Life Insurance Offico, tho Public Trust Of-. fice, the Public Works Departmonfc, tho Tourist Department, and the Agricultural Department.. For the last fifteen years he had been in charge of tho library of tho Agricultural Department. Ilis wide knowledge of the o.xtrcriiely varied sections of that ;impoitant library mado him a much valued ■officer of the Department, and he was highly esteemed for • his invariable courtesy and painstaking in- 1 dustry. Mr, M'Carthy was greatly esteemed also by the many . outBide his own Department who frequently had occasion to consult-him for library,, references. For some time Mr. M'Carthy had not been in good health, and he recently-underwent an operation in hospital, the immediate cause of deatli being pneumonia, which supervened. He leaves: a widow and.ii' grown-up family of ono daughter and two. sous. '
