SCENES OUTSIDE GAOL
NEWSPAPERS PURCHASE HER
LIFE STORY
Australian Press Association—United Servlc*. (Received 9th March, 2 p.m.) LONDON,'Bth March. "Captain Barker's" rcleaso' from Holloway Gaol! was perhaps the most dramatic of any' individual adventure of her career. Attired in a brown tweed costume and a black valour hat, she was smuggled through 'a small side door at the rear of the prison, which is used by officials alone. She was first of all led along the side of the moat to the , tack of the prison, where a 6ft brick wall barred her way. Barker made light of the barrier, and, placing her foot in a niche of the brickwork, vaulted over into the garden. She was in the jolliest mood, laughing and joking, and ■with a cigarette in her mouth. Meanwhile, the main gates ,of the prison were besieged by such a large crowd, mostly women, that mounted police- had to be' summoned to maintain order. The crowd continued .to grow, and awaited for" three or four hours. A decoy ear left the prison with two wardresses, against whom another •woman was huddled. The crowd, however, were not deluded, and burst into laughter, refusing to move. • When Barker left the secret doorway at the rear of the prison she faced two resourceful photographers who suspectrd the possibility of such a ruse, but she hurriedly hid her face with hor lands, jumped intjf a waiting car, which rounded the road in full view of a part of the great crowd while she was leaning back smoking a cigarette. ' Her solicitor states that the next step .•will be the public esamination in bankiuptcy, the date of which has not yet leen fixed. Barker had not long been released she was besieged with newspaper offers of her life story. It is understood that this has been secured by ,a group of London newspapers fora big ■Bum.
